MARINE Cpl. Dave Michael Santos will be buried today at the San Jose cemetery on Rota, according to his father, David Mundo Santos.

The entire Rota community and  CNMI government officials are expected to join Santos’ family in bringing him to his final resting place.

Lt. Gov. Eloy S. Inos, Rota Mayor Melchor A. Mendiola and the Marine’s auntie, Rep. Teresita A. Santos, Ind.-Rota, are among the officials who will join the family in paying tribute to Cpl. Santos before his burial at 12 noon.

Cpl. Santos’ remains arrived at 1 p.m. from Guam where they were transferred from Dover, Delaware yesterday.

Cpl. Santos, 21, died in Afghanistan after a fellow serviceman stabbed him.

It was his second deployment to Afghanistan since he joined the U.S. military in 2007. His first deployment was in 2008 as member of the landing team 2/6 of the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit.

Rep. Santos introduced a House commemorative resolution conveying condolence and sympathy to Cpl. Santos’  family.

“Cpl. Santos’ courage, determination, and undying will to fight for the freedom of his country and its people will forever be remembered by the people of the CNMI, most especially the people of his beloved home, Rota,” the resolution stated.

It added that the young Marine will also be remembered by his family, colleagues, friends and acquaintances as a hard-working man, a dedicated member of the armed forces and, most importantly, a great person.

+13 #2 fmsantosjr July 29, 2010 01:45PM I knew Cpl Santos. I deployed with him on his 1st deployment. He was one of my Marines on that deployment. He was squared- away (Marine Terminology for a great marine), he followed and accomplished tasks in a timely manner. I will miss you brother. To the family of Cpl Santos, Im sorry that you lost not only a great Marine but a great person all in all. He will be greatly missed. Once more, Oorah Marine! Semper Fidelis!

+11 #1 zenpiper July 29, 2010 11:12AM I wish there were more news about his being stabbed to death by a fellow Marine. It's one thing to die in combat, but this death sure sounds like a homicide.
