Saipan has a new computer school

SAIPAN Programming School or SPS teaches Java coding and Computer Basics in Room 307 of the Marianas Business Plaza in Susupe.

One of its instructors is an experienced software developer, Lawrence Green, a former instructor at College of the Desert in California. He also taught CompTIA A+ at Software Education of America.

According to the other SPS instructor and its administrator, Ruby Panoy, most of their students are also enrolled at Northern Marianas College, are full-time workers or housekeepers. She said half of the students are between 40 and 60 years old.

SPS opened on Jan. 24, 2019. Three people attended the initial lecture, Green said. “They had a huge amount of interest, but when it came time for the class, everybody backed out. I figured I am good at teaching, but I am terrible at getting students,” he added in jest.

Panoy said SPS began advertising in March and April through social media and flyers. By June, they already had 52 students. It was around this time when Panoy joined Green in managing the school.

Panoy has a bachelor of science degree in computer science and a four-year experience as a graphic artist. She also has 12 years of working experience in corporate, manufacturing and Business Process Outsource industries. She is currently taking a master’s degree in business management specializing in project management.

Next month, SPS will teach computer basics, computer programming, Microsoft office applications, and basic computer graphics.

“We came up with these four courses because they are in demand,” Panoy said.

The training duration for computer programming is four months, and the rate is $150 per month. Classes are held Tuesday and Thursday, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Classes on Saturday are set by appointment.
