Alcohol a factor in fatal car collision

THE Department of Public Safety said alcohol was a factor in the auto collision in Susupe that killed a 36-year-old man on Sunday.
But DPS spokeswoman Lei Ogumoro said other factors have not been ruled out as the incident is still under investigation.
DPS identified the fatality as Taey Won Kwon. He was pronounced dead at 12:40 a.m. on Sunday at the Commonwealth Health Center.
He sustained severe head and chest injuries.
A traffic investigation disclosed that Kwon caused the crash when he failed to yield on entering the highway.
The accident happened along Beach Road in Susupe near Winchells and the Saipan Grand Hotel.
A preliminary investigation revealed that prior to the accident, a green Toyota Tacoma operated by Harry C. Conley, 34, was in the inner lane heading north on Beach Road.
When Conley was in front of Winchells, the beige Toyota Corolla operated by Kwon pulled out of the parking lot onto the highway and collided with the truck.
After the first collision, the truck spun around and collided with a white Toyota Echo parked nearby.
The Corolla then collided with a gray Toyota passenger van which was parked near the entrance of the hotel.
Responding medics extracted Kwon from the vehicle and transported him to CHC where he was pronounced dead later by the attending physician, Dr. Laidlaw.
DPS said police briefly interviewed a male passenger who had also been in the Corolla, but he left the scene without informing the officer.
Ogumoro said Conley was arrested later for reckless driving and driving under the influence of alcohol.
Conley was escorted to the Department of Corrections for booking and detention.
DPS said the weather was rainy and the road wet at the time of the accident.
Conley’s vehicle sustained moderate damage to the front and minor damage to the rear.
Kwon’s vehicle sustained extensive damage to its left side and moderate damage to the front.
The other vehicles involved in the crash sustained minor fender damage and scratches.
