PSS to hold ‘simple’ Education Day celebration

DUE to lack of funds, the Public School System will hold a “simple” Education Day celebration this year.
Education Commissioner David M. Borja yesterday said the event will be held on the newly built stage of Dandan Elementary School on Nov. 21, and all 1,195 PSS staffers are expected to join the leadership in highlighting “the success of public school educators.”
During the annual celebration, PSS names the outstanding teacher, teacher aide and support staffer.
Borja said a cash prize is usually given to these winners, but this is not a “sure thing” this year.
Last year over $3,000 was spent for the celebration.
“I initially (told) the Board of Education, principals and teachers that we might not hold the event…but I was asked to reconsider because the celebration must continue as it is important that we reflect on our successes as educators,” Borja said, adding that “this may be the simplest celebration.”
Borja said this year’s theme is “One Drop of Education Leads to a Pool of Success” — the winning entry submitted by 6th grader Jesus Macahito Sablan Jr. of San Vicente school in the recently concluded logo-making contest which drew the participation of 11 students from various schools.
“This year’s theme has many wonderful meanings for us,” Borja said. “A teacher standing in front of a pool of bright eyes truly influences the quality of many students’ journey to success — success that above all depends upon people, that builds relations, teams, partnerships and motivates people to contribute, and a success that cultivates leadership, creativity and excellence and that encourages listening by seeking new ideas and advice.”
Borja said teaching is a calling and a way of life.
On Thursday, Gov. Benigno R. Fitial will designate November as Education Month.
Borja said he’s hoping that the community and the private sector will also recognize the valuable work of educators in the CNMI.
