SOUTHERN High
School officials waited until students were released from classes yesterday
to have a contractor work on cleaning up the direct expansion, or DX,
unit ducts.
It was not known whether yesterdays cleaning would solve the odor
problem altogether or how long the project would take.
Superintendent of Education Luis Reyes is hopeful to have it done before
the end of the week to allow students to revert to their regular bell
schedule.
There are three classrooms affected by the foul odor.
This was discovered last week when the DX unit was switched on.
Reyes told Variety that the contractor hired to do the work is JRN Air
Conditioning and Refrigeration.
Guam Public School System maintenance employees tried to clean the ducts
themselves but were unsuccessful. They said the odor was coming from a
deeper area in the duct. This resulted in GPSS hiring JRN to fix the problem.
This also comes after a contractor installed close to 40 split air-conditioning
units in more than 20 classrooms.
GPSS was hopeful to remove the students from the modified bell schedule
but because of the foul smell, members of the Guam Education Policy Board
voted to keep the modified bell schedule for 30 more days.
