The culture of diversity

BULA Cultura, Uno na Familia. Maraming Kultura, Isang Pamilya. Many Cultures, One Family. This was the theme for Mount Carmel School’s SY 2007-2008 Cultural Day.
On Tuesday, Oct. 9, the Mount Carmel School community, along with family and friends, came together to celebrate the diversity of not only the school or island, but of the world.
The festivities opened with a Cultural Day Program that presented and represented the multitudes of cultural wealth on our islands.
The program commenced at 8 a.m. at the stage on the field encircled by the campus.
The program opened with a doxology performed by a select group of students followed closely by an opening message from the “greatest principal ever,” Galvin Deleon Guerrero.
A secret special number by the faculty and staff opened the long line of worldly performances.
Each grade level showcased different performances that allowed the school community to be entertained.
The performances varied from dance numbers, song performances, recitals, and a fashion show.
Following the Cultural Day program, there was a festival of foods.
Each classroom was set to host some feasts that would represent the many cultures of its students.
This year’s cultural day was only the second time that it was celebrated following the CNMI’s celebration of cultural diversity.
Thus the festivities were tied in with the island-wide celebration.
Cultural day was a day of fun and diversity for the school community.
Although many students still feel that classes should have been canceled for the day, they were still very pleased to have celebrated the diversity of the islands.
Cultural diversity is something that the MCS community can pride itself on because the mixture of ideas, learning styles, and cultures enhance the close knit relationship that truly makes Mount Carmel School not only a community, but a family.
