TARAWA (Pacnews) — The president of Kiribati, Anote Tong, has been returned to power.
Tong was one of four candidates in the election whose full results will be released later by the Chief Justice of Kiribati.
The two main opposition nominees failed to secure parliamentary nomination in a secret vote.
But their exclusion from the vote sparked protests.
Civilian supporters of the opposition party held a peaceful gathering in the capital expressing their dissatisfaction over why candidates from the opposition did not get a place in this presidential election.
