THE weekend swim
scene was full of action as the Guam Swimming Federation held the Short
Course Championships at the Hagatna Pools with a 25yard configuration.
The meet commenced at 9am and 96 swimmers competed in 56 heats throughout
the morning vying for the championships medal awarded in each age
group. In all 27 medals were awarded to various individuals in different age
categories.
As well the GSF hosted 90 swimmers who competed in 38 heats in an afternoon
Long Course meet later that day.
GSF President Greg Shulte said that on Saturday, the Short Course
Championships took place in the morning and then the Federation
conducted a Long Course meet swim over the Hagatnas Pool 50 meter pool
configuration. Many swimmers who swum in the earlier Short Course
Championships also swam in the meet. While no new Guam records were
set today, many swimmers swam personal best times and many of the senior
swimmers used the meet to fine-tune their performances with a view to
selection for the coming South Pacific Games later this year in August, said
Shulte.
As well, Shulte noted that the GSF 2006-2007 Calendar lists the
Guam Championships to be held at Hagatna pool on June 1 and June 2, 2007. Participation
in the Guam Championships is only open to swimmers who have achieved a
certain time standard and almost all who swam at todays long course
meet were aiming at improving their times to qualify or improve their
starting positions at the seasons finale, said Shulte.Upcoming
in the local swim scene is the All Island Invitational Long Course
meet scheduled for April 21 at 9 a.m. Admission is free and the meet
is open to the public.
Incidentally, Shulte said th e Championships meet for the Short Course
meet was the last for this season. The next Short Course meet is scheduled
for late September at the start of the 2007/2008 GSF Meet Calendar.
