Girls’ HS soccer start moved to Wednesday

By R. Vincent Tupaz

YESTERDAY, Mama Nature threw a monkey wrench in what was to be the first day of the 2007  girls’ high school soccer season and forced the cancellation of most things athletic.
Three separate games at various venues around the island were slated to kick-off the Independent Interscholastic Athletic Association of Guam Girls’ High School Soccer season yesterday but the impending storm forced officials to cancel the games and move the start of the season to tomorrow.
According to Marty Boudreau, Vice President of the IIAAG, the scheduled games will have to be fit in during the season. “We’ll get together with the affected teams and have them decide on the rescheduling,” stated Boudreau. “There’s no way we can extend the season with graduations and all the activities that come up with the end of the school year.”
Initially, Games were to be  played at the Southern High School, George Washington and John F. Kennedy football fields with the Lady Royals from Notre Dame  challenging the Southern High Lady Dolphins in the first match of the ‘07 season and the up North at JFK’s Ramsey field, the Simon Sanchez Sharks looked to  feast on some Kennedy Islanders while the Geckos were supposed to take on the Guam High Panthers. Now, like the Academy of Our Lady of Guam, Harvest Christian Academy and the St. John’s Knights all enjoyed a bye at the start of the season.
Instead, Wednesday’s schedule will feature the first games of the year. Southern will challenge Guam High at the JFK field at 4:30 p.m. And  GW will take on Academy at Southern at 4:30 p.m.  Then on Thursday, the first night game of the season will take place when Harvest  goes against Sanchez at JFK at 6:30 p.m.
Most contest will feature division games through the playoffs. Still, the schedule shows that teams will not be restricted to division play as some games will be cross divisional play.  The Taga Division consists of Harvest, JFK, Sanchez, and St. John’s. The Gadao Division boasts Academy, Guam High, GW,  Norte Dame and Southern.
The IIAAG girls’ soccer season playoffs are scheduled towards the end of May.
