The Fiji military has handed over the manning of checkpoints in the Pacific
nation to the police force.
Military spokesman Maj. Neumi Leweni said they handed over all checkpoints
to police at midnight on Saturday .
Leweni said all military personnel have returned to camp and police officers
have taken over operations.
He said the handing over of checkpoints indicated an improvement in the
security situation.
However, he did not wish to comment further on the roles and responsibilities
the soldiers will assume.
Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said the handover clearly indicated
the cooperation between the security forces.
Sayed-Khaiyum said it is the result of continuous security assessments
by the different agencies and the home affairs ministry.
He said the military and police have been working together in monitoring
security throughout the country since the military takeover on Dec. 5
last year.
