SEABRIDGE swept PTI in the finals to top the 2007 Belau Amateur Softball Association Slow-pitch Masters League last Sunday at the Dandan Elementary School Ballfield.
The pennant champion won Game 1 in extra innings, 5-4, and finished the best-of-three title series with a 10-2 victory in Game 2.
The series opener was played in 10 innings with Tony Luzama delivering the winning-run on a Darwin Masaharu RBI.
The ninth inning ended in a tie, 4-all, when Frank Palacios made the game-tying run at the bottom of ninth on a fielder’s choice.
Palacios was second at bat and hit a single. Leadoff batter Pep Bob was thrown in a 6-3 putout play.
PTI pitcher Paul Baron struck out third batter Bobby Lizama for the second out. Fourth batter Manny Tenorio then hit a single advancing Palacios to second. Another single from Leo Bobai moved Palacios to third. Shortstop Jess Peterson was the next to bat and drove Palacios home on a fielder’s choice.
PTI was at bat at the top of the 10th and was shut out. Leadoff batter and third baseman Ed Kapileo was beaten to first base. Seabridge pitcher Tenorio walked Jack Diaz. PTI’s next two batters, Wayne and Perry Techur flied out, ending the top of the 10th.
Luzama was Seabridge’s leadoff batter at the bottom of the 10th and advanced to first on a PTI error.
Masaharu was next at the plate hitting a single and driving Luzama home to move Seabridge a win away from notching the Masters championships.
Before his RBI at the bottom of the 10th, Masaharu was 0-for-3 at the plate. Bobai led the Seabridge offense going 3-for-4 with three singles.
Inos Yamada led PTI in Game 1 going 6-for-7 with two runs, five singles and two RBIs.
Seabridge had an easier time in Game 2 allowing PTI to score only at the top of the fifth inning.
Seabridge played tough defense in the first four innings shutting out PTI. Tenorio pitched in the first three innings allowing three hits and giving up two walks.
Palacios replaced Tenorio at the top of the fourth and allowed two hits, two walks and two runs.
But that was the last time PTI scored as Seabridge put up another tough defense in the last two innings to prevent PTI from forcing a deciding Game 3.
Peterson led Seabrige in Game 2 going 4-for-4 with three singles, three RBIs and one inside-the-park home run.
Peterson was later named Most Valuable Player in the tournament.
Tenorio went 2-for-5 with three runs, two singles and an RBI.
Seabridge and PTI arranged their title duel after sweeping separate foes in the semifinals.
The eventual champion beat Che’luus, while PTI downed Kamesang.
