Aztecs top Matrix, 3 Majors games suspended

By Roselyn B. Monroyo
Variety News Staff

ONLY one match in the Majors division of the 2007 Saipan Little League Baseball tournament was completed last Sunday, while the three remaining games were suspended due to the unplayable condition at the Miguel “Tan Ge” Basa Pangelinan Ballfield.
According to SLLB statistician Roque Celis, officials decided to call off the three remaining games in the Majors division because of too much dust. On Sunday afternoon, the island started to experience strong winds due to tropical storm Kong Rey 01W, which yesterday afternoon was upgraded to a typhoon.
The Toyota Matrix and Kagman Mobil Aztecs played the lone match in the Majors with the latter posting a 13-6 victory.
Leroy Reyes led the Aztecs’ win going 5-for-5 at the plate. The Aztecs pitcher also had a cycle, two doubles, a triple, a homer, four runs and three RBIs.
Greg Iskawa was also perfect at the plate hitting 2-for-2.
The three postponed games were the Tanapag Braves against the Bank of Saipan Red Sox in the second match, the Ol’Aces I vs the Chalan Kanoa Bears and the Hustlers against McDonalds.
In other results over the weekend, the PTI Fielders cruised to back-to-back victories in the Big League.
The Fielders first downed the Twins, 9-4, and then whipped the UMDA Aztecs, 17-7.
Against the Twins, Brandon Santos hit 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
Shane Mendiola and Shane Yamada joined forces in the Fielders’ 10-point victory over the Aztecs.
Mendiola went 3-for-4 with three runs, a triple, one inside-the-park homer and three RBIs, while Yamada was perfect at the plate going 3-for-3 with three runs, one homer, two RBIs and a triple.
Bill Fleming was also perfect at the plate hitting 3-for-3 with a double.
In other Big League results, the Hustlers downed the Northern Angels, 6-2, last Sunday.
In the Juniors division, the Fielders topped the Pirates, 11-5.
The schedule of cancelled games in the Majors division will be announced later.
