TWO women were arrested for stealing an old man’s ATM card and withdrawing over $5,000 from the victim’s account without his knowledge.
Meliza Deleon Guerrero, 35, and Barbie Ann Babauta Borja, 26, were arrested for theft and conspiracy for stealing Jesus M. Babauta’s money.
Deleon Guerrero was released from the custody of the Department of Corrections after she posted bail while Borja was remanded to the department’s custody after her bail hearing on Monday.
The affidavit of Detective Patrick Maanao stated that the incident was reported by one of the victim’s sons to his other son, Jesse Babauta, on March 13.
The brother told Jesse Babauta that their father ‘s ATM card was missing from his wallet. Jesse Babauta told his brother Diego Babauta to contact the bank to stop any transactions.
Later that day, Diego Babauta called Jesse Babauta and told him that the ATM card had “appeared” in the victim’s bedroom.
The affidavit stated that Borja, Jesse Babauta’s girlfriend, admitted taking the victim’s money. Borja said the theft was the idea of Deleon Guerrero, Jesse Babauta’s sister-in-law.
The affidavit stated that aside from the victim, only Deleon Guerrero knew the victim’s pin number.
Deleon Guerrero would usually run errands for the victim or they would go together to make withdrawals.
The affidavit stated that the defendants withdrew a total of $1,612 from the Bank of Guam and $3,816.85 from the First Hawaiian Bank. The withdrawals were made between Feb. 13 and March 19.
The defendants would then rent a room at the Sun Palace Hotel where Deleon Guerrero would play poker.
