AS the opening games begin for the Independent Interscholastic Athletic Association of Guam Girls’ Soccer League, the George Washington Geckos took on the Academy of Our Lady of Guam Cougars.
Despite ending in a tie at the Southern High School soccer fields on Wednesday, the teams gave soccer fans something to look forward to this season. As the energetic first half came to a close both teams remained scoreless.
However the Geckos quickly went on the attack in the second half scoring only five minutes in when the Geckos Tanya Blas slipped by one Cougar defender and shot a powerful shot that deflected off the goalkeeper and into the goal giving the Geckos a 1-0 lead.
However the Cougars would counter with only thirteen minutes left in the game of a corner kick tying the game at one a piece. From there both teams would turn to their shut down defense that was present in the first half which would lead to a tie at the end of the game 1-1.
In the other opening game the Southern High Dolphins would fend of the Guam High Panthers attack to win 1-0. Moving the Dolphins to 1-0 on the season and dropping the Panthers to 0-1.
