The national government of
Palau has received a total of $5,253,139 grants in the month of March
alone, including the $3,355,000 from the government of Taiwan providing
funding assistance to the insolvent Pacific Savings Bank.
Earlier, President Remengesau publicly announced that this $3.3 million
fund to assist the defunct PSB to pay its depositors was secured as a
loan with no interest.
Last week, House Speaker Augustine Mesebeluu said that until now, he has
not seen any document that would determine where that money originated,
whether it is in the form of a grant or a loan.
But the data from the Ministry of Finance showed that the $3.3 million
grant was received on March 2 and the grant period will lapse on Sept.
30.
Another grant received on March 9 from the University of the South Pacific
based in Fiji was the $95,040 that was used for the Education Awareness
Week Program that was successfully initiated by the Ministry of Education.
On March 15, a grant of $23,953 was received from the Czech Republic to
provide fund to pay all expense for volunteer dentist Dr. Palek.
A grant of $279,146 was also received on March 19 from the US Department
of Health and Human Services for the Ministry of Health to provide fund
supporting health care system to deliver and coordinate effective care
to victims of terrorism and other public health emergencies.
The last grant received was the $1.5 million from the US Department of
Transportation for the Ministry of Commerce and Trade for the fund for
Airport Rescue and Firefighting Facility Phase II for the Palau International
Airport.
