GPSS employees paid

By Trina A. San Agustin
Variety News Staff

RIGHT before noon on Friday, Guam Public School System Superintendent Luis Reyes was informed that the $6 million needed for employee gross payroll was transferred into the GPSS account.
After hearing about the transfer, Reyes gave the payroll department the “all clear” to print and distribute employee paychecks.
This is nothing new to GPSS employees. For the past months, they have been crossing their fingers hoping that the needed amount for gross payroll would be given to GPSS so they could get paid.
According to Reyes, the $6 million the agency received was enough to cover only payroll, and not make any payments to the $3.3 million in arrears to GPSS vendors.
Last Monday, Reyes was informed that there was money in GPSS’s bank account. Although he’s not certain where that money came from, he used $5 million to pay vendors.
Meanwhile, the agency now has to find a way to stop the Guam Power Authority and the Guam Waterworks Authority from disconnecting some of their GPSS accounts for non-payment.
