THE Guam Systems
for Assistive Technology or (GSAT) will be hosting the 4th annual Walk,
Wheel and Run 5K race on Saturday April 14th. This annual event is aimed
to include those athletes that are wheelchairs and other persons with
disabilities.
GSAT encourages anyone and everyone to participate in the 5K event which
begins at the University of Guams Deans Circle and will spill
out onto Route 15 and loop around the Community College and George Washington
High School Campuses.
However GSAT has included a flat one-mile course for those who do not
want to participate in the entire course. The funds raised at the event
will be used to design a model home featuring some of the new assistive
technologies. GSAT is aimed at showing exactly how to renovate an existing
house in order to make it more accessible to everybody.
After the race, Guam Systems for Assistive Technology will then host an
open house for anyone interested in learning more about GSAT, which is
a federal grant program targeted on promoting the use of technology to
help people with disabilities do everyday things in life. The program
operates by allowing people to try out devices for thirty days free of
charge and also offers demonstrations on different technologies. GSAT
also shows people how to select and purchase the proper wheelchair. T-shirts
will be given to the first 350 finishers, and raffle prizes include one-night
stays at the various hotels here on Guam.
The raffle will also include gift certificates to different restaurants
and other prizes donated by the local businesses. The event will begin
at 6:00 am on Saturday April 14th, but show time will be at 5:00 am.
However, people who need special accommodations must contact GSAT at least
three days prior to the event. Applications are available at Hornet Sports,
GSAT, and Deans Circle, House #19, University of Guam.
The event will be $5 per person, $2 per person with a disability, and
free for all children under the age of nine. For additional information
call 735-2490/2491 or 735-2491.
