THE father and daughter tandem of Boyet and Thea Minor downed the mother and son pair of Matty and Russell Buenaventura in straight sets to rule the mixed doubles 4.0 division of the 7th Annual PIC Pepsi Tennis Championships yesterday on the Pacific Islands Club hardcourt.
Boyet and Thea had a hard time thwarting the Buenaventuras in the first set winning by only two, 6-4, but played beautiful music in the second set en route to a dominating 6-0 triumph.
The Minors advanced to the finals after beating Phil Kalen and Dina Jones in the semis, 6-1, 6-1. Matty and Russell prevailed over Warwick Lowe and Melany Daly in the other semis match, 6-0, 6-2.
Thea’s victory in the mixed 4.0 doubles gave her her second doubles title. In the morning match, she teamed up with Letty Jones in tripping Lydia Tan and Sarah in the finals of the women’s 4.0 doubles, 6-4, 6-0.
Tan and Sarah moved into the finals after winning via forfeit over Mimi Climand and Maggie Terro, while Thea and Letty grabbed the second finals seat after defeating Matty and Ellen Uy, 6-0, 6-0.
The 12-year old Minor, who battled players twice and even three times her age in the doubles events, was aiming for her third doubles crown yesterday afternoon. She and mother Joy were playing Mayuko Arriola and Na Lin Heo in the women’s Open doubles finals. The results of the match were unavailable at press time.
If the mother and daughter tandem prevails, Thea will nail her fourth championship in the annual netfest. She won the men’s 12-and-under singles title, two weeks ago.
In other results, the youthful pair of Nicolas Son and Ji Hoon Heo topped the men’s Open doubles.
The NMI junior squad teammates were undefeated in the round-robin event. They won over Daniel Son and Lito Cabrera, 6-4, 7-6, last Saturday, and secured the title after whipping Peter Loyola and Jack McClure yesterday, 6-1, 6-1.
Loyola earlier nailed the mixed Open title with partner Joy as they beat siblings Reo and Mayuko Arriola, 7-5, 6-4.
In the men’s 4.0 doubles finals, Northern Mariana Islands Tennis Association president Eli Buenaventura and Saipan Tennis Association head Roy Pangelinan joined forces in downing Hector Benitez and George Olando, 6-2, 6-2.
Bob Ferrer and junior netter James Camacho topped the men’s 3.0 doubles prevailing over Dr. Hormaz Dastoor and Bert Ventura, 6-3, 7-6.
Ventura and Dastoor moved into the finals after winning over Evan Hunsberger and Marino Pungilug, 6-0, 6-0, while Camacho and Ferrer gained a finals entry after slipping past Lowe and JR Ngeskebei, 6-2, 6-0.
In the men’s 12-and-under finals, the pair of Jake Lee and Christian Miller downed siblings Rafael and Angelo Jones, 6-3, 7-5.
Lee and Miller claimed the first finals ticket after defeating Chris Cajigan and Dylan Ackerman, 6-2, 6-2.
The Jones brothers won over siblings Lucas and Nathan Nutting in the other semis pair, 6-3, 6-1.
