THE Department of Correction
director Robert Camacho told Variety that three DOC employees in the administrative
offices will lose their jobs. This is all being done in reaction to the
governors proposed government wide funding cuts.
During Camachos discussion on his proposed 2.5-percent fiscal year
2007 budget reduction he presented his plans to save money.
"We are looking at eliminating the night differential pay for our
officers, that will save us $75,000. We will also be eliminating three
employees from our administrative offices. I cannot say particularly which
positions because I do not want them to panic," Camacho said.
Another reduction in DOCs revised budget is not paying out the base
pay issuance of 12 officers deployed with the U.S. Military. According
to Camacho, this saves them $125,000 over the fiscal year.
"These officers are due back to Guam in September so we should be
fine. We will just simply pay out their benefits," Camacho added.
Camacho also stated that officers, that recently graduated and hired,
are now on eight-hour shifts. This cuts the DOC budget by $50,000.
"We have also reduced the use of our vehicles to avoid high fuel
prices and maintenance/repairs that may be incurred. I am looking into
having employees conserve energy by switching off air-conditioning units
and lights when not in use," Camacho said.
The corrections agency is also reducing their use of office supplies by
eliminating the use of a hard copy of a memo or letter by simply e-mailing
documents.
As Camacho told Variety in an earlier interview the agency has eliminated
all planned travels which are funded through the general fund. Camacho
said some traveling may be done, but those will be paid for using federal
funds.
"We eliminated a substantial amount from our budget. We are just
doing our part and we hope that the other agencies do the same,"
Camacho added.
Camacho was tasked, by the governor, to reduce their $13.9-million fiscal
year 2007 budget by $300,000 to fall in line with Governor Felix P. Camachos
revised fiscal year budget, which is the focus of lawmakers for the past
week.
