By Kyle Terwilliger
Variety News Staff

THE Shell Miller Lite 25th Annual Smokin’ Wheels is scheduled to begin this Friday April 13th at the Calvo Memorial Off-Road Park in Yigo. The events will begin on Friday and will run through the weekend. Friday will be the prep day at the Calvo Memorial Off-Road Park for all the off-road endurance and motocross racers. The track will open for practice at 9 a.m.
This will allow both local and off-island participants a chance to learn the course and make adjustments. At 6:00 pm the Drag Racing Association of Guam will be opening early for the "Friday Night Drags." Saturday will then showcase most of the racing with the gates opening at 8:00 am and races beginning at 9:00 am with a two-hour motorcycle off-road endurance race to kick off the day.
The race is a team event and is run much like a single two-hour heat. At 10:00 am the GRSCCA will set up a course at the north end of the parking lot that will challenge all drivers’ tarmac skills and car set up as they navigate through the cones in a high-speed timed event. RCCRG radio-controlled off-road vehicle race No. 1 will also begin at ten in the back of the grand stands.
The RCCRG has designed a stadium type off-road course that will send the vehicles high into the air as competitors race the first heats for each of the respective classes to determine the qualifying order for the Sunday main event. In the next hour of racing the 4x4 rigs of the Guam Off-Road Association will try to conquer many of the natural and manmade obstacles in the Rock Crawling course. 12:30 pm will showcase the kids and amateur motocross.
The GMAC along with the JATVA will be racing the infield portion of the park. Each class, which includes women’s, ATVs and mini-bikes, will have two heats to race in which they will earn points depending on how they place. At 4:00 pm the Guam Off-Road Association will be back in action as the participants take on the second course of the event. 4:00 will also showcase the Off-road buggy and the truck timed qualifications.
The GMAC off-road racing buggies and trucks will be out to put in a fast time in order to qualify in the front of the starting grid for the main event which is a three-hour endurance race on Sunday. At 5:00 pm the Drag Racing Association of Guam will open its gates early once again in anticipation of the busy night that is expected. The night will close with the Pro ATV and motorcycle motocross. Under the stadium lights, the pro classes will run two heats to determine this year’s champion in each of the classes.
The Japan All-Terrain Vehicle Association counts this race as a points-earning event for its national championship. Sunday will then host the final races for the events that qualified during Friday or Saturday.
