ONWELL topped the 2007 KFAS President’s Cup beating Tinian Dynasty in the finals, 1-0, last Sunday at the Oleai Sports Complex Field.
Onwell and Tinian Dynasty advanced to the championship match of the Korean Football Association of Saipan-organized tournament after topping their respective groups.
At the end of the elimination round, Tinian Dynasty earned four points and placed first in Group A. It downed Real Mariana, 2-1, last Sunday and forced L&S/Alliance to a draw on March 18 before the tournament was suspended due to haze emitted by the Anatahan volcano and from fires across Southeast Asia.
Onwell also finished with four points in Group B tying the NMI coach Jeff “Ziggy” Korytoski-led Fiesta Inter/Independents, but beat the latter in the tiebreak.
Onwell grabbed the second finals seat after shutting out Korean A, 6-0.
In the championship match, Sombun scored the lone goal in the game to lift Onwell to a title win.
Sombun was later named Most Valuable Player of the tournament, while Real Mariana’s Hee Chang Yang claimed the Best Defender award.
Bell of Tinian Dynasty was chosen Most Valuable Player, while Young Gil of Korean A took the Sportsmanship award.
Korytoski scored the most goals in the annual event hitting three.
Onwell went home with a championship trophy and $200 cash, while Tinian Dynasty received $150. Real Marianas, which defeated Fiesta Inter/Independents in the consolation match, 2-1, was awarded $100.
