Salvation Army Thrift Store burglarized

By Trina A. San Agustin
Variety News Staff

THE Salvation Army Thrift Store was burglarized, merchandise scattered on the floor, graffiti on the walls, and things in the store in general disarray yesterday.
According to the organization’s public relations officer Donna Kloppenberg, the thrift store was broken into sometime between Monday evening and yesterday morning.
“It is very disappointing that someone could do this. Now we are not able to open and we exist to help the people of Guam,” Kloppenberg told Variety.
The organization received numerous phone calls from the public, offering their assistance in cleaning up the facility after hearing the news, according to Kloppenberg.
Members of the community are welcome to help clean up the Tamuning thrift store. Please call 647-1569 or 477-9872.
“We are still assessing the damage and trying to determine if anything has been taken. We started a list of items that appear to be missing,” she added.
Some of the thrift store’s office equipment such as a computer and telephone units were damaged by the culprit(s).
As of 4 p.m. yesterday, Kloppenberg said some of the items in the store like electronic equipment, video tapes, and other items were damaged as well.
Every Wednesday at the thrift store is “Voucher Day,” where clients can shop for household items, clothing, and other items using their vouchers. It was not certain if today’s Voucher Day would be cancelled as a result of the breakin.
“We are working hard to get the store open (Wednesday) for Voucher Day,” said Kloppenberg.
The Guam Police Department is asking the public for assistance in apprehending the individual(s) responsible for this crime. If you have any information on this case, call GPD at 472-8911 or Guam Crime Stoppers at 477-HELP (4357). Crime Stoppers does not use caller ID and you do not have to leave your name.
Robbery suspect arrested
In other news, 21-year-old Bechu Jain, of Toto, was arrested Monday afternoon by GPD Criminal Investigation Section officers, according to GPD public information officer Allan Guzman.
Jain was arrested and charged with robbery, aggravated assault, assault, family violence, and felonious restraint.
Police said Jain allegedly robbed a woman at the Maite Mobil station on March 21.
Guzman told Variety that Jain beat the woman he robbed. He got away with her purse and her vehicle.
