Although he has
not yet officially filed her candidacy with the Election Commission, Former
Vice President Sandra Pierantozzi has signified that she wants to fill
the vacant seat left by the late Johnny Reklai and vowed to find the right
way to resolve divided Senate.
"I hope to be the catalyst in the Senate," Pierantozzi said.
The only woman to have served in the Senate previously before becoming
Vice President in the first term of office of President Remengesau, Pierantozzi
said he has gathered enough signatures for petition as required by the
Election Commission.
Nominating position must contain at least 50 signatures of qualified voters
of the Republic of Palau.
"I am running and I have enough time before the deadline on April
24. In fact I started campaigning," she said.
Hokkons Baules became the first to file his candidacy with the Election
Commission on April 2.
Both Baules and Pierantozzi were members of the 2005 Constitutional Convention.
Baules represented Koror State while Pirantozzi was at-large.
Pirantozzi said that her first goal is to unify the Senate saying that
as a woman she has the advantage "because I have the peaceful effect."
"The good thing in me is that I will worked with both sides,"
she said
Pierantozzi said that she would use her long-time experience in pubic
service as well as in civic related activities to have a strong impact
in the OEK.
"I hope and I am confident that I will be very fruitful as a peacemaker.
Im not promising to accomplish this goal but I will try my best,"
she said.
The second reason for running, she said, is that she would work on the
financial aspect for the benefit of Palau.
"If I win and have the chance to make it, I will work immediately
work for the interest of the country after all our goal is to make a better
solution to the problems. We must set aside political difference and struggle
for the better," she said.
