Chinese envoy visits Pohnpei

PALIKIR, Pohnpei (Department of Foreign Affairs) — Ambassador Wang Yongqiu, special envoy of the Chinese government to the Pacific Islands Forum, visited Pohnpei recently.
Wang headed a delegation that consisted of Liu Yang, third secretary of the Department of North America and Oceania of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Zhu Jianzhong, chief executive officer of the Shanghai Fisheries Corp.; Wang Cheng, general manager of Shanghai Jinhui Deep Sea Fisheries Co. Ltd.; and Zhang Jing, economist of the Department of Preferential Loans of the Export-Import Bank of China.
Wang is one of two special envoys designated by China for which one was assigned to the Pacific region and the second to the Middle East.
His visit was a follow-up on the China-Pacific Islands Forum that was held in Nadi, Fiji in April 2006.
During Wang’s visit, he met with Federated States of Micronesia President Joseph J. Urusemal, acting Secretary of Foreign Affairs Lorin S. Robert and most of the leadership of the FSM.
Wang expressed his pleasure with the healthy model relationship that the two countries have forged and assured further cooperation and assistance in the future.
An array of issues ranging from fisheries, fuel, education, manufacturing, joint ventures, and the Chinese preferential loan were raised in the meetings with the leadership for possible cooperation between the two countries.
Aside from his busy schedule, Wang did make time to tour Pohnpei.
