Dry season keeps firefighters busy

GUAM Fire Department firefighters were busy yesterday putting out separate fires, one in Harmon and another in Toto.
According to GFD spokesperson/firefighter Phyllis Blas, the fire at Harmon Industrial Park was reported at 10:11 a.m. yesterday.
The grass fire was on Sisket Road behind K-Mart in Tamuning near a warehouse.
According to Variety sources, some individuals in the surrounding area had to be evacuated because of the heavy smoke.
As of press time, there were no injuries reported. Blas said the Guam Police Department helped with traffic control while the Guam Office of Homeland Security/Civil Defense provided sandwiches and water.
“At 11:48 a.m., 75 percent of the fire was extinguished. It was brought under control at 1:51 p.m. There are still some hot spots so some guys are still there to monitor it,” said Blas.
A separate fire broke out at 12:52 p.m. yesterday, for the second time in two days, at the Toto Scrap Yard. This fire caused the Guam Environmental Protection Agency to send their Air Pollution Control and Solid Waste personnel to the scene to monitor.
GEPA spokesperson Tammy Andersen told Variety that they were sent to the Toto fire because of its close proximity to the scrap yard.
According to Variety sources, it was a grass and trash fire.
Andersen said GEPA personnel will remain at the site to monitor the situation. She added that because of the location of the fire, there are no homes in the immediate area that need to be evacuated.
“They are monitoring the situation. They are also putting a cover on it,” she added.
