Rota aims to be cleaner, safer, ‘shinier’

(DEQ) — The community of Rota plans a full month of activities to make the island cleaner, safer and shinier the Rota-way.
An Earth Day Environmental Careers Symposium will be held on April 19 at NMC-Rota’s from 9:45 a.m. until 12:45 noon. 
Lihla Noori, Rota Environmental Action and Leadership Group project coordinator, said the focus will be on promoting various careers in the environmental sector. 
The symposiu is open to all members in the community.
To commemorate Earth Day, the Luta Marine Education Center in collaboration with the Coral Reef Alliance will conduct its beach cleanup on April 21 along the shorelines in Songsong from Pinatag to West Harbor.
The Rota Environmental Action and Leadership Group as well as the Rota high school Coral Conservation Outreach group will conduct a reef flat marine monitoring and planning for their Coral reef conservation puppet show on April 17, 23, and 24. 
Northern Marianas College also intends to conduct an islandwide cleanup involving all government agencies and communities on April 25.
On April 26, the Luta Watershed Committee, the multi-agency steering committee for the Coral Reef Initiative Talakhaya Revegetation Project, will hold a meeting.   The group will be confirming the 2007 project plan and coordinating the Luta Livelihood Initiative toward the planting of 10,000 seedlings and completing Phase 1 planting goals.
