OC1/OC2 solo races
to begin on Sunday
THE first solo OC1/OC2 race of the year will be this Sunday April 15th in Malesso. The “Cocos’ Challenge” will feature both a short and a long course, so that paddlers of all levels and experience can compete.
The short course will have a 7 am show time and a 7 am start time and will go from the Merizo Pier to Cocos Island and back. This is only a 4 mile event, and will be inside the lagoon. Although there may be some light winds and currents, this is essentially a very safe open water course and can be paddled by beginners or juniors.
This race will also feature a ‘handicap’ start where the slower paddlers will be given a head start and be rabbits for the faster paddlers to try and catch. Placing will still be determined by overall times, but finishing all together should be exciting. The long course will consist of one clockwise loop around Cocos Island; this is much more challenging with the reef crossings, down-swell surf conditions and the longest distance traveled so far this year for the paddlers. Although the back side of Cocos is famous for great surf runs on an OC1, the up-swell grind to cross the reef and the last two miles back into the Pier can take their toll and will show the best all around and strongest paddlers.
This heat will have a 8 am show time and start after the last short course paddlers gets back, start time is projected to be at 8:30 am. This event is designed so that all the canoes can be used twice, and as many paddlers who want to race will have a chance. Hosted by MPRA, Race Director Rick Appleton may be contacted at 789-0137 or 477-7807 for entries, boat request or further information.
Guam special olympics
looking for volunteers
THE Guam Special Olympics are still looking for volunteers for the Aquatics Season. The aquatics training and competition program is in need of volunteers to serve as head coaches and swimming assistants.
No necessary experience is needed for the volunteer program. Volunteers do not even have to know how to swim. However, certified lifeguards, swim instructors or coaches are encouraged to participate.
All athletes range in abilities and ages and volunteers are needed to match up with the athletes. The number of athletes allowed to participate will depend largely on the number of coaches and volunteers willing to help.
Volunteers are also needed as: Aquatics Director, Meet Director, Volunteer Coordinator, Logistics Coordinator, and to serve on the various committees that will plan and carry out the swimming program.
If interested contact Carole at 646-9647 or stop by the Agana Pool on Saturdays between three and five pm. Practices will begin this Saturday April 14th.

Guam Masters set to take on Guahan Old School
THIS Sunday, April 15th at Paseo Stadium starting 10:30 am the two top teams of the 76 Circle K Guam Masters League will battle against each other. The Guam Masters (4-0) will take on the Guahan Old School (3-0-1).
In November of 2006 the two teams traveled to Australia to compete in the Pan Pacific Masters Tournament but never played against each other. The Guahan Old School advanced to the gold medal game but lost and came home with a silver medal whereas the Guam Masters advanced to the bronze medal game and lost their chance at bringing home a medal. Although the two teams did not meet head to head, Sunday’s game will determine who will take first place in the first round league standings.
The league consists of a two round robin with the playoffs being held in July. Guam Masters have been traveling annually to Australia to compete and is lead by team manager Roke Alcantara Sr. and coached by Ed Rios.
The Guahan Old School team includes team manager Warren Pelletier assisted by Manny Aguon a former BBL star and top percentage hitter in the league. The 1:30 pm scheduled game is between the Masters Baseball Academy led by team manager Jake Barns and the Guam Seniors led by team manager Steve Guerrero.
