Delegate Jonathan Isechal
has asked the assistance of the Ministry of Health for the lack of licensed
physician in Peleliu State, who would provide medical care for the residents
there.
In his letter to Dr. Stevenson Kuartei dated April 4, Isechal said he
had received numerous communications from his constituents concerning
the lack of licensed physician or nurse in Peleliu.
Isechal noted that Peleliu received the benefit of the medical services
of Dr. Ishmael Togamai, who had just left Palau on Feb. 22.
Isechal said that since then, Peleliu has been without the consistent
availability of a proper physician or nurse.
He said that a resident physician or nurse can provide medical assistance
to the citizens of Angaur State, as well as the many visitors and divers
who frequent the Peleliu area.
"While the men and women of the Belau National Hospital are excellent
medical providers, their proximity to Peleliu is simply too far for most
Peleliu and Angaur residents and visitors, especially in situations requiring
urgent medical care," he said.
He said that without the provision of medical care within the State, the
health and well-being of the citizens of Peleliu and Angaur is severely
compromised.
"I am aware that funding for the provision of medical care in the
Republic is not plentiful. However, I think that you will agree that our
location and population necessitate the provision of a resident physician
or nurse on the island," he said.
