Tinian lawmakers wait for report on casino investor

THE Tinian legislative delegation is waiting for the report of the Tinian Casino Control Gaming Commission on the financial stability of the Marianas Resort and Development Corp. which is planning to build a $179 million casino on Tinian.
Last month, officials of the commission flew to South Korea for the required on-site inspection and investigation of the casino investor.
Rep. Edwin P. Aldan, Covenant-Tinian, said since the group returned from the 10-day official trip a report has yet to be submitted.
“They’re back but I haven’t seen a report. I did request certain documents from the commission and we’re waiting for them,” he told Variety on Friday.
Aldan said they have to make sure that the new investor has the financial capability to handle the second and third phases of the project.
“As far as phase 1 of the project, they are cleared. What we’re working on are phases 2 and 3 of the project,” he said.
According to Aldan, during the public hearing on Tinian, three individuals raised concerns about the public land that needs to be cleared for the project.
Aldan said MRDC’s financier was expected to fly to Tinian last Friday to meet with the commissioners and the legislative delegation.
“The commissioners met with the financier during their visit in Korea. The meeting (on Friday night) was a chance for the delegation to sit down and directly ask about its finances,” the lawmaker said.
