Mason’s edges 79ers; Stingers tame Jaguar

Mason’s Hardware dealt Ngiwal 79ers their first defeat in the second round with a 75-74 decision on Saturday in the National Basketball League.
Team captain Maka Ichiro scored six of his game high 23 points including the marginal two-pointer as Mason’s posted its second win after seven matches and remained seventh place in Pool 2 of Division II.
Despite the loss, the 79ers are still on top in the pool with a 5-1 record.
Earlier on Friday April 6, Airai defeated Peches, 107-93, and the two teams are now tied with identical 4-3 win-loss records.
In Pool 1, the Stingers bounced back with a 97-84 victory over the Jaguars, who suffered their first setback in the second round after winning all their first six outings.
Both the Stingers and the Jaguars are now on top of the pool with similar 6-1 cards.
On Thursday April 5, PCC Mesekiu defeated the Bullets, 85-79.
The current team standings are Pool 1 -- Stingers (6-1), Jaguars (6-1), Mesang (5-2), Mesekiu (4-3), Bullets (3-4), Kabong (2-5), Ngiwal Central (1-6) and Klebokel (1-6); Pool 2 – Ngiwal 79ers (6-1), Blue Sharks (5-2), Peches (4-3), Airai (4-3), PPR (4-3), On Fire (3-4), Mason’s Hardware (2-5) and Kinsmen (0-7).
In Division I, the Ididers defeated the Islanders, 70-66, with Gino Smau scoring 14 of his 17 points and Ongor had nine of his 19 both in the fourth quarter to lead the team to its fifth in nine games of the second round.
Peched also won over the Ranchers, 92-75, on Friday April 6 and the Styxers turned back Meda, 72-69, on Thursday April 5.
The following are the current team standings: Rivals 16-1, Peched (10-7), Breakers (10-6), Meda (9-8), Styxers (9-8), Ididers (9-9), Islanders (8-9), Ikelauans (6-10), Suns (6-11) and Ranchers (1-17).
