PSS legal counsel resigns

ONE of the two legal counsels of the Public School System and Board of Education resigned last week, according to BOE Chairman Roman C. Benavente.
Heather Kennedy, who has been serving the system for approximately eight years, has cited personal reasons in her resignation.
Karen Claver has temporarily taking over Kennedy’s function until a replacement is named.
“We regret to lose her but it’s a personal reason why she’s moving out. She resigned to assume a lighter job with the CNMI court to accommodate the needs of her family,” Benavente said, adding that the board respects the legal counsel’s decision and is grateful to the service she has rendered for the public schools.
“For eight years, Heather has been very supportive, very good and a very dedicated worker. She’s loyal to the system and she has demonstrated tremendous accomplishments in our previous court case…we’re very thankful to her,” Benavente said.
He was referring to the lawsuit against PSS filed by a former teacher who claimed she was illegally terminated.
Kennedy and Klaver represented PSS in the case.
Benavente said the board in its next meeting will decide when to come out with a vacancy announcement.
“We will definitely look for her replacement but as to when we will make the announcement…we will wait for the board to decide on that because we have also some important matters to discuss,” he said.
Benavente said the board is “very much satisfied” with the performance of Kennedy and wishes her good luck on her new job.
