Next
public forum on May 10
THE next public forum, originally
slated for April 19, has now been moved to Thursday, May 10, to allow
greater time to prepare popular initiatives that have been proposed and
discussed in previous forums.
The proposed popular initiatives include:
1) Reducing or eliminating the Legislatures discretionary funds
and subsistence allowances;
2) Establishing a part-time Legislature;
3) Reducing the number of representatives in the House; and
4) Repealing Public Law 9-2, which exempts the Legislature from the Open
Government Act.
Anyone who would like to help prepare and/or circulate these proposed
initiatives for signature so they can be placed on the ballot this year
may call Tina Sablan at 233-0770, or e-mail tinasablan@gmail.com.
For more information, see www.thecnmi.com.
Red
flag on Managaha, green flag on Tinian
(DEQ) The Division
of Environmental Quality says water samples collected from Managahas
right side from the dock MG10 contained excessive concentrations
of fecal indicator bacteria that exceeded the CNMIs marine water
quality standards.
These bacteria can indicate the presence of human and animal waste in
the water. But studies have shown that storm water runoff in tropical
environments may also contain these bacteria from the natural environment,
which may not be directly associated with public health concerns.
Still, to adequately address public health concerns, DEQ has given the
location a red flag and advises the public not to fish or swim within
300 feet of this location for the next 48 hours or until otherwise notified.
On Tinian, none of the samples collected contained excessive concentration
of fecal indicator bacteria nor did they exceed the marine water quality
standards.
DEQ assigns all of the sampled beach sites on Tinian a green flag.
