KYUNG Yu scored
30 points and hit timely baskets in the fourth quarter to power the Ports
Police to an 85-81 win over the DPS Enforcers last Monday in the 2007
Inter-government Basketball League last Wednesday at the Gilbert C. Ada
Gym.
The win was the Ports Police first in two games after losing their debut
against the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs last week in
Pool B.
In Pool B, NMC Proa claimed the lead in its group after whipping the Department
of Corrections, 80-64. Proa improved to a 2-0 record, while Corrections
dropped to a 0-2 slate.
The Ports Police and last years runnersup the Enforcers played in
the first game and were engaged in a close match.
The Enforcers led after the first quarter, 15-11, with John Santos firing
eight points.
The first half ended in a deadlock, 28-all, as Yu started to find his
marks scoring eight points.
Yu continued to lead the Ports Police in the second half nailing nine
markers in the third period, while Mike Guerrero chipped in eight to put
their team in the lead, 52-51, entering the final canto.
Roy Kaipat and Yu had a shootout in the fourth period with the latter
prevailing in the end. Yu scored 13 points in the final quarter, including
seven of the Ports Police last nine points in the closing minutes of the
game. Kaipat drilled 10 markers in the fourth period.
Guerrero finished with 24 points for the Ports Police, which also drew
15 and 13 points from Gary Cabrera and Ray Borja, respectively.
Danny Punimata paced the Enforcers with 20 points, while Kaipat chipped
in 18.
In the second match, Proa saved the best for last outscoring Corrections
in the fourth quarter, 31-21, to nail a 16-point win.
Proa was leading by only six, 49-43, at the end of the third period when
Tony Diaz started the fourth quarter with back-to-back baskets and his
teammates stepped up on offense for an easy win.
Kevin Aldan, who was scoreless in the first three quarters, had eight
points in the fourth period, Stoney Villagomez added seven, Jerry Diaz
had four and four other Proa players contributed two points apiece.
Jeffrey Quitugua topscored for Corrections with 17 points. Iramk Simada
had 16 points, but was scoreless in the crucial fourth quarter.
Kelvin Fitial scored the most for Proa with 15 points, while Tony Diaz
and Villagomez fired 13 and 11 markers, respectively.
