Jennifer Yano, the only Palauan lady to ride on the Hokule’a from its Yap to Palau voyage, shared her experiences to the 8th Grade students of Meyuns Elementary School during heir regular class yesterday.
Yano made slide presentations and spoke about the importance of the voyage.
Yano said she was invited by the students under head teacher Emitacha Edwards to speak.
The Hokule’a along with Alingano Maisu and the accompanying boat Kama Hele originated from Hawaai. The voyage is now on its way to Japan.
Edwards said that it is important that the students will learn this visit about its significance to our culture.
She said that the present generation must learn how the past generation was able to establish navigation in the Pacific Region by traditional means such as through stars, ocean currents and waves.
She said that it is crucial for the children today to know our ancestors’ cultural heritage so that they can appreciate that culture.
