THE passage of legislation
that would restore the Public School Systems $6 million budget cut
was welcomed by education officials yesterday, saying that there will
be no more layoffs and delays in the opening of schools next year.
We are relieved, Board of Education Chairman Roman C. Benavente
said yesterday, referring to the passage of H.B. 15-242. Passing
this bill means we can open our schools on time and our employees will
not be laid off. Were grateful that the House recognizes the needs
of our students and the importance of education its a good
day for us.
Benavente, along with nearly 30 principals and vice principals of public
schools, attended the House session yesterday.
This is our second day ( at the Legislature) and were grateful
that our parents and students supported us all the way in this fight,
he said. Were all feeling a little bit more comfortable
at
least for now, he added.
On Wednesday, about 50 students together with their teachers and parents
gathered outside the legislative building on Capital Hill to protest the
school systems budget cut.
Students carried banners, posters and placards and handed letters to lawmakers.
Benavente said we will now lobby for the passage of H.B. 15-242
in the Senate.
