Gov’t to review records on injuries related to unexploded ordnance

By Emmanuel T. Erediano
Variety News Staff

THE Department of Public Health has joined the Department of Public Lands in reviewing injuries and other health problems involving unexploded World War II bombs in the CNMI.
Public Health and DPL will review hospital records to identify injuries associated with unexploded ordinance, or UXO.
Acting Public Health Secretary Joseph Santos said in an interview that they have yet to review hospital records on ordnance-related injuries and could not divulge any data.
Retired doctors and nurses will be interviewed to obtain additional information about injuries in the past.
DPL, for its part, is now in the process of retaining the services of retired nurses to conduct video interviews with individuals who have first-hand knowledge of injuries or health problems associated with UXO.
Dr. Richard Brostrom, Public Health’s medical director, will get in touch with those who have been injured by UXO.
Brostrom can be contacted at 664-4870/72.
This project is funded by a brownfields grant from the U.S Environmental Protection Agency.
