GOVERNOR Felix P. Camacho has asked residents to observe a moment of silence at 12 noon today to join the nation in mourning the victims of the Virginia Tech victims.
More than 30 students died during two shootings on the campus of Virginia Tech earlier this week. The death total so far — 33 including the gunman —makes the Virginia Tech rampage the deadliest shooting in U.S. history.
The governor yesterday afternoon declared an official State of Mourning for today in honor of the victims of the Virginia Tech mass killing.
“The people of Guam join the Commonwealth of Virginia and the nation in mourning the tragic loss of students and faculty at Virginia Tech who died in the worst mass killing in U.S. history,” Camacho wrote in Proclamation No. 2007-033, declaring a state of mourning in honor of the Virginia Tech students and faculty who died.
Virginia Gov. Timothy M. Kaine has asked all governors throughout the nation to join the Commonwealth of Virginia in observing a day of mourning on April 20, 2007.
A bell-ringing ceremony will begin at 12 noon in Virginia to honor the victims. Camacho has asked the Archdiocese of Agana to ring church bells throughout the island at 12 noon.
“We join the nation in condemning senseless violence and we embrace the national effort to stop violence in school communities and throughout our neighborhoods,” Camacho said.
The governor also has ordered the flag of the United States and the Guam flag to be flown at half-staff immediately and until sunset Sunday, April 22, 2007.
