Guam High’s D’Andre Weaver rules high jump

By Kyle Terwilliger
Variety News Staff

ONE by one they knocked the bar down. Each frustrated that they couldn’t make it over one more time but each time it narrowed the field until there was one. That one was Guam High’s D’Andre Weaver who would only need to clear five feet two inches for the win in the IIAAG track and field’s high jump on Friday at the JFK field.
Weaver would have some trouble clearing the five foot mark but would clear it on his third try moving him into the finals along with George Washington’s Mychal Borja and Edward Babauta. D’Andre who was the first jumper all day would once again have to go first in the finals.
He would set the bar high as he cleared the 5’2” mark on his first attempt. Mychal Borja and Edward Babauta wouldn’t make it over that mark to give Weaver the win in the High Jump. Subsequently giving Borja and Babauta second and third place. Babauta would make up for his tie for second in the High Jump by winning both the Long Jump and Triple Jump events.
D’Andre Weaver would also be apart both the 4x100 meter and the 4x400 meter relay races in which his team would take third in both. D’Andre would not be the only Weaver to finish first Friday. Guam High’s Devin Weaver would finish first in the Men’s 100 Meter Dash with a time of 12.09. Track & Field breaks down the event into both Men and Women’s events, and each school takes on another within the division.
Friday’s Men’s finals would go as follows: Father Duenas defeated Guam High 77-49, George Washington defeated Southern High School 118-0, and John F. Kennedy would defeat Simon Sanchez 78-49. With the wins Father Duenas moves to one and one, George Washington moves to two and zero, and John F. Kennedy also moves to two and zero on the season.
The losses drop Simon Sanchez and Southern High to zero and two, while Guam High falls to one and one on the season. On the Women’s side: Academy of Our Lady Guam defeated Guam High 65-48, George Washington defeated Southern High School 91-0, and John F. Kennedy defeated Simon Sanchez 109.33-17.66.
The wins move John F. Kennedy and George Washington to two and zero on the season, Academy of Our Lady Guam moves to one and one.
The losses drop both Southern High School and Simon Sanchez to zero and two on the season and Guam High follows suit with the Men’s and moves to one and one. The next IIAAG Track & Field event will be on Friday at the John F. Kennedy field.
