Guerrero’s no-hitter lifts Greyhounds to victory

By Kyle Terwilliger
Variety News Staff

ONLY a day after Mark Buehrle pitched a no hitter for the Chicago White Sox, the Guam Greyhounds’ Peterson Guerrero decided to do the same. The Guam Greyhounds would defeat the Kosrae Speedos Friday night 11-1 in seven innings at the Paseo Stadium. Despite giving up one run Guerrero would throw a no hitter.
The visiting Speedos would make the game a lot closer than the score would indicate. The Speedos would draw first blood in the top of the first inning after Bradley Jonah reached first on a walk, would steal second, reach third on a fielders choice hit by Milson Seymour and would then score on a suicide squeeze by James George giving him the only RBI for the Speedos.
Alik George would then draw a walk and that would be the turning point for Guerrero who would then go on to strikeout Rusian Tolenoa for the third out of the top of the first inning. The Greyhounds would respond in the bottom of the first inning scoring two runs on one hit and one error.
The bottom of the inning would begin with a fly-out then Alan Sarmiento and Rico Castro would both draw walks and would later score on a two RBI double by catcher Peter Guerrero bringing the score to 2-1 after one complete inning of play. In the top of the second inning Peterson Guerrero would strike out the side and rival pitcher Alik George for the Speedos would get the Greyhounds to go three up three down to close a short second inning with the score still 2-1 in the Greyhounds favor.
In the top of the third inning Edward Skilling would reach first on a walk and would then be caught stealing. Skilling would be the last base runner that Peterson Guerrero would allow in the game. In the bottom of the third the Greyhounds would add another run when Rico Castro would double with one out and then Pete Concepcion would follow up with another double to score Castro giving the Greyhounds a 3-1 lead after three innings.
The Speedos would keep the game very close giving up another run in the fourth inning when John Salas scored on an error. With the game only 4 – 1 the Speedos looked in good shape to make comeback at any time, but in the sixth inning the outlook would turn bad for the Speedos.
The Greyhounds would add three more runs in the sixth inning on four straight hits. Joey Taijeron would single followed by an RBI double by Alan Sarmiento bringing in Taijeron. Sarmiento would then be brought in on an RBI single by Rico Castro.
Castro would then be brought around on an RBI single by Abel Salas. This would knock Alik George out of the game and the Speedos would turn to James George to stop the bleeding, and he would temporarily, getting the Speedos out of the sixth inning having given up only three runs.
However with the score 7-1 going into the bottom of the seventh inning the Greyhounds would finish it off scoring four runs and ending the game on a walk off single by Pete Concepcion. The Speedos would be unable to get an out in the bottom of the seventh as they would lose by the mercy rule.
The Greyhounds would begin the inning with a double by John Sarmiento, followed by a single by Jaylan Alvarez bringing in Sarmiento. Joey Taijeron would then bring Alvarez in on double. The game would end when, with the bases loaded and no outs Abel Salas would bring in Taijeron and Alan Sarmiento who walked earlier on a single to center.
