FATHER Duenas
would improve to two and one on the season after they defeated the Guam
High Panthers in straight sets Friday evening. The Friars who came of
a win against the same Panthers on Thursday would defeat them again dropping
the Panthers to one and three on the season.
The Friars would win the first set on a tap by Sang Woo Choi, 25-19. The
Panthers would come out in the second set ready to play. The Panthers
would go up 11-5 forcing the Friars to call time out.
Coming out of the time out the Friars would go on an eight to two run
tying the game up at 13 a piece and with the momentum slipping away from
the Panthers coach Vaughn Mesa would call a timeout. The timeout would
settle the Panthers down, but could not keep the Friars from scoring.
The two teams would continue to trade points but the Friars would finally
take their first lead of the second set at 15 16 forcing the Panthers
to take another timeout. The Friars would score coming out of the timeout
to put the Friars up two but the Panthers would not give up scoring three
straight they would take the lead once again 18 17.
Sang Woo Choi would stop the Panthers scoring binge by tapping the
ball over the Panthers defenders and into the middle void on the Panthers
side to tie the game at 18.
The night would end fittingly for Sang Woo Choi as the Friars went on
a 7-1 run to end the game and fittingly enough Sang Woo Choi would serve
the last three points for the win. Sang Woo Choi seemed to be the Panther
killer Friday night stopping every piece of momentum the Panthers would
start to get. The Friars won both sets 25 19.
The Panthers would be led by Mark Ceres with three kills and Sei Tajima
with two kills and five digs in the loss. The Friars Sang Woo Choi
would finish the game with four kills, an ace and a block.
The Friars would also get excellent play from Gregorio Borja who
would have eight assists for the Friars. In other games the 3-1 Notre
Dame Royals would defeat the 1-2 George Washington Geckos in three sets
winning 21-5, 25-13, and 15-7.
The Simon Sanchez Sharks would improve their undefeated record on Friday
winning in three sets over the St. Johns Knights 25-21, 23-25, 15-9.
The Knights drop to two and two on the season.
