The Melekeok
State Legislature has recently adopted a Resolution to increase its membership
to include legislator representing each of the six hamlets.
MSL Res. No. 6-16-7S was adopted on March 28, amending Article IX Section
1 of the Melekeok State Constitution.
The Resolution explained that the members of the Sixth Melekeok State
Legislature recognized that although the current constitution has served
the people of Melekeok well and provides a peaceful and orderly society,
there is a fundamental right of the people to call for the change of the
constitution.
The amended version of Section 1 Article IX states that all legislative
powers and duties of the Government of the State of Melekeok shall be
vested in the State Legislature, shall be a unicameral assembly composed
of 22 members.
The membership shall be the four highest-ranking clans chiefs (saus)
of the Ngarabaimelekeong namely the Reklai, Rechebong, Ruluked and Ngirkungiil.
It shall also include the six hamlet chiefs of the Rubekul Telngal namely
Ngetibuchel of Ngeburch, Orukei of Ngeruliang, Secharuleong of Ngermelech,
Renguul of Ukaeb, Yobech of Ngerang and Ngiraingas of Ngerubesang,
It shall also include six legislators, for the term of four years, to
be elected by the voters from the six hamlets and it shall also include
five legislators at-large elected through out the State of Melekeok, each
for a term of four years.
It shall also be composed of the Governor.
