Smith’s Sonic Booms blank Striking Machines to take women’s soccer lead

SMITH’s Sonic Booms shut out the Grand Mean Striking Machines, 2-0, last Saturday at the Oleai Sports Complex Field to gain the lead in the Spring 2007 NMIFA Women’s Recreational League.
NMI team member Brenda Schultz scored both goals for Smith’s Sonic Booms to give her team its first win in the tournament. The Smith’s Sonic Booms debut against PIC’s Pretty Incredible Chicks on April 14 during the opening of the league ended in a 3-3 draw.
Schultz drilled the first goal of the game in the 12th minute off a pass from Emily Gries. The second goal came in the 25th minute in the second half with Schultz receiving a pass from Maryana Gramlich.
After last Saturday’s game, Smith’s Sonic Booms now have four points. A team gets three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a loss.
In the first game, PIC’s Pretty Incredible Chicks and Fiesta Fuerza drew with the game ending in a 3-3 tie.
Sarah Helbert paced PIC with her two goals, including the game-tying goal in the 35 th minute of the second half.
Patricia Coleman drew first blood scoring a goal off a Becca Rath pass in the 18th minute. After 15 minutes, Helbert tied the match, 1-all, after a Don Decha assist.
Roxie Lamar receiving a pass from Malaiwan Punpern quickly put Fiesta back in the lead with a goal in the 35th minute.
Fiesta Fuerza increased its lead to 2, 3-1, after co-captain Lindsay Davis scored her first goal in the match at the 3:20 mark of the second half.
But PIC’s Pretty Incredible Chicks recovered nailing the last two goals of the match. Divya Sharma scored at the 16:30 mark of the second half after a pass from Helbert, who tied the game after drilling her second goal with 10 minutes remaining in the match.
With their second game ending in a draw, Fiesta Fuerza and PIC’s Pretty Incredible Chicks share second place in the team standings with two points apiece. The Grand Mean Striking Machines are at the bottom of the team standings with one point.
This Saturday, Smith’s Sonic Booms aim for back-to-back wins as they take on Fiesta Fuerza in the first game at 8:30 a.m. PIC’s Pretty Incredible Chicks will face the Grand Mean Striking Machines in the second match at 10 a.m.
