GUAM dominated the 2007 Jam Attack volleyball tournament after winning the men’s and women’s divisions yesterday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gym.
Team Haggan dethroned the NU Heights with a straight sets victory in the men’s finals, 25-23, 25-18, while Team Quality beat fellow Guam team the Isa Masters in the women’s championship match, 25-15, 26-24.
Nine teams played in the men’s division with Tinian, CH Hammers, Peanut Butter and Jam Attackers, Beach Jammers, G-Rollers, AA Schoobw and Fanians joining the two Guam squads.
Haggan topped Pool A after the double-robin elimination round with an undefeated 8-0 record, while the 2006 champion NU Heights finished first in Pool B with a 6-0 slate.
Saipan’s CH Hammers placed second in Pool A with a 6-2 record, while PB&J Attackers ranked second in Pool B with a 4-2 slate.
Haggan beat PB&J Attackers in its first game in the double-elimination playoffs and then thwarted the NU Heights to gain the first finals entry last Saturday.
PB&J Attackers and CH Hammers after losing to Guam teams in their first match in the playoffs squared off for the right to face NU Heights for the last finals ticket.
PB&J Attackers prevailed over CH Hammers, but failed to advance to the finals as the former lost on points to the NU Heights in the semifinals yesterday morning.
The NU Heights won the first set, as PB&J Attackers had only five players in the opening set.
PB&J Attackers had enough players in the second set, which they won, 25-23, but following tournament rules on set forfeiture, the Heights were awarded the win as they had the most points after two sets.
Eight teams battled for the women’s division.
Dethroned champion Pikkan Gaga was in Pool A with the Isa Masters, Beach Queens and Beach Jammers, while Team Quality joined Tinian, Isa Juniors and Chagi Fan in Pool B.
The Isa Masters placed first in Pool A, 6-0, followed by Beach Queens, 4-2. Team Quality was also undefeated with a 6-0 slate, while Tinian grabbed the last semis ticket with a 3-3 record in the preliminary.
Team Quality moved into the finals after downing the Isa Masters and Beach Queens. The Isa Masters earned a rematch with Team Quality after beating Tinian, which settled for third place.
The Isa Masters had a chance to extend the game to third set when they led at 19-13. But Team Quality came back tying the game at 23-all. The Isa Masters moved to a set away from claiming the second set, 24-23, but failed to finish the game. Team Quality scored three more points to end the match.
