THE Sabalu Farmers Market
Association celebrated its sixth anniversary in Susupe on Saturday.
Association president Edward C. Deleon Guerrero said the association was
actually formed on April 27, but they decided to hold the celebration
a week earlier to give way to the Flame Tree Arts Festival which will
be held in the area from April 26 to 29.
Guerrero said six years ago a group of Kagman farmers were having difficulty
finding a market for their produce.
In March 2001, more than 20 farmers decided discuss with regulatory agencies
the designation of a market place for their produce.
He said 90 percent of Sabalu vendors are Kagman farmers.
Guerrero said the farmers earnings from the Sabalu market range from $100
to $500 each Saturday.
During Saturdays celebration, Jess M. Castro demonstrated the traditional
way of husking coconuts and the use of coconut milk in many local dishes.
Other farmers and vendors also demonstrated sweet potato and tapioca preparation,
and distributed them for free to the public.
