College students offer teens school tips

By Jacqueline Dela Cruz
Variety Teen Reporter

As the school year draws to a close, hundreds of high school juniors and seniors are planning for the next step.
MV Teen interviewed two Northern Marianas College students to get an insight of what to expect when you decide to take the leap from high school to college.
Maricon Bricia is a 22 year-old student, daughter of Mira and Alejandro Bricia, and is currently a sophomore student at NMC majoring in Nursing.
Born and raised in the Philippines, she finds that her biggest challenge is securing financial assistance for college tuitions and scholarships at NMC.
Bricia graduated from Mt. Carmel High School in 2005 as the valedictorian and she has been at the top of her classes since she had been to NMC.
Stress, however, is a big factor when it comes to balancing schoolwork and managing her time.
“I have so much stress as a student, believe me it’s no fun, and I would have to say my stress level would be on a scale of 9 out of 10 all the time” says Bricia.
As graduation approaches, she sometimes feels extremely overwhelmed with the work that her classes demand. “Sometimes I feel like I can’t handle it, but either way, I try my best on everything,” says Bricia. “I try to enjoy my courses more, and see what aspects about it I could really relate myself to more personally.”
Bricia who wanted to be a nurse since high school advises teens today to never let opportunities pass them by.
“Stepping into a new school is like stepping into the new world! My advice to teens is to be open to every opportunity that comes in their way, but try your best to pick out the things you can relate to yourself. Think about being practical too because you would want to choose a career or course that is in demand right now,” says Bricia.
Bricia wished that NMC would offer more tutoring sessions in most classes, and encourage instructors to use more incentives such as extra credit or extra projects.
“They should also offer work-study and scholarships for international students. It will surely help many of us,” she said
Adrian Mejia Flores, 20, is the son of Mariquita and Oscar Flores and started attending NMC on the Fall Semester of 2005. He is currently majoring in Nursing.
Flores’ biggest challenge as a college student is getting the right amount of textbooks for his classes at NMC.
“I would like to advise teens today to take placement tests seriously, attend NMC for a semester or a year if they plan on moving to another institution and to be aware about enrolling for classes as soon as possible because they fill up very fast,” said Flores.
So far, Flores’ view toward his studies is that he is doing an average job.
“Average because textbooks for classes are borrowed. Before I attended college, I thought that all classes at NMC are easy, but, yes it is hard,” says Flores.
Flores wishes that NMC would have a bigger library and more computers with internet connection.
Flores’ goal is to get a bachelor’s degree in Nursing. After he graduates, he wants to be a full time nurse and make a living on either Hawaii or California and spend few years at Japan.
