AN estimated $10,000 in cash
and several electronic devices stolen from airline passengers were recovered
by airport police from airport luggage handlers recently arrested.
Guam International Airport Authority Police Chief Mark Charfauros said
there will be more arrests within a week following an investigation of
the four arrested employees at Aircraft Service International Group, or
ASIG.
The arrested ASIG employees are Orville Tapia, Florencio Bautista, Renato
Reburiano and Elvin Ramos Galvez.
They were charged with theft of property held in trust, conspiracy, guilt
established by complicity, and criminal facilitation.
According to Charfauros, items recovered from the arrested ASIG employees
included digital cameras, video cameras and GIAA property such as a portable
power transformer.
He said the stolen items will be held for evidence and will eventually
be turned over to airline companies for return to their respective passengers.
The arrests were made after GIAA launched an investigation following mounting
complaints of luggage pilferage.
GIAA general manager Jess Torres earlier told Variety that they used surveillance
cameras and monitoring devices to catch the culprits in the act of pilfering
the luggage.
Torres said air carriers have different ways of handling their luggage
and after a thorough review and meeting with airlines, they decided to
launch a sting operation.
He said the stealing began the moment the luggage or boxes left the Transportation
Security Administration x-ray machine to go to a screening area and into
a baggage make-up area handled by ASIG workers.
Torres said the arrested individuals work for a private firm contracted
by a carrier, and none who work directly for GIAA has been found to be
involved in the theft.
