RAYMOND Ignacio Duenas, the main suspect in the series of burglaries and drug deals arrested in Dededo last week, was given a federal public defender after the court determined that he is not financially capable to hire an attorney.
Duenas was in the courtroom of Guam District Court Judge Joaquin Manibusan yesterday for an initial appearance in connection with the separate felony charges filed against him by federal authorities.
Duenas, 33, is charged with possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine in district court and was earlier charged along with his wife Lourdes Duenas in trial court with multiple felony counts of theft by receiving stolen property and drug possession.
His preliminary examination in federal court is set for April 30, 2007 at 9:30 a.m.
Atty. John Gorman of the Federal Public Defender was appointed to represent Duenas.
During the search at the residence of Duenas on Y-Sengsong Road in Dededo, Drug Enforcement Administration agents and members of the Guam Police Department discovered a Ziploc bag with approximately 76 grams of methamphetamine otherwise known as “ice.”
The raiding team also discovered electronic scales and various plastic bags believed to have been used in the trafficking of controlled substances.
Illegal entry
In other news, a Chinese national who repeatedly entered the United States unlawfully was brought to court yesterday after his arrest over the weekend.
Hui Fang Ling was indicted on Nov. 9, 2005 for improper entry by an alien.
He allegedly entered Guam unlawfully on Feb. 27, 2004 and eluded examination and inspection of immigration officers.
His warrant of arrest was issued in 2005 but he was only captured last Friday in Tumon.
He was first charged with the same criminal offense on Dec. 5, 2003.
During his initial appearance yesterday, Guam District Court Magistrate Judge Joaquin Manibusan Jr. ordered his detention and set his trial for June 19 at 9:30 a.m.
After a review of Ling’s financial affidavit, the court appointed Atty. Joaquin C. Arriola Jr. to represent the defendant.
Ling waives reading of the indictment and pleaded not guilty to the felony charges.
Sentencing moved
In other news, the scheduled sentencing of Justin Ken Taisipic today has been moved for another month.
The continued sentencing was agreed to both by Taisipic’s lawyer, Richard Arens, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Rosetta San Nicolas for reason not made available to the public.
Taisipic, 22, was charged with Hobbs Act robbery for using and carrying a firearm during a crime of violence. He entered a guilty plea on June 24, 2006.
