Guahan Old School remain undefeated

By Kyle Terwilliger
Variety News Staff

THE Guahan Old School was not about to relinquish their first place position and were consistent in their defensive play beating Yona Rulz 16-7.
The Old School showed a different lineup than usual but their mentality remained the same playing outstanding defense down the stretch and kept Yona from scoring in the final three innings of play.
Relief pitcher Joe San Miguel contributed the final two strikeouts and center fielder Rodney Villagomez would reel in each fly ball despite the bright glare from the sun beating down on Paseo Stadium. Yona Rulz made a final effort to catch up behind pitcher Danny Pocaigue’s home run followed by three consecutive runs by Richard Mendiola, Frank Pangelinan, and Ken Sablan on errors at third base that brought them within 3 in the bottom of the 3rd inning.
Old School, who posts the top three batters in the league, did exactly what was expected of them and helped score six runs to finish off the game. Leading the offense for Old School were left fielder Calvin Toves with two runs and three RBI’s, short stop Ruben Payumo with three runs and two RBI’s, center fielder Rod Villagomez with three runs and one RBI.
Winning pitcher was awarded to John Halloran and the losing pitcher to Danny Pocaigue who went the distance pitching the whole game.
In the second game of the day the five and one Guam Masters took on the one and five Bluewings. The Guam Masters had the hot stick outscoring the Bluewings 18-0. With 10 of the 12 players on the team contributing a run or more the Masters had no problem with the Bluewings. The hits for the Masters came more frequently in the top of the 5th inning when they scored nine runs to finish off the game with Umpire Bill Palomo calling the game based on the 10 run mercy rule.
Leading the Masters were short stop Ben Reyes with four runs, one RBI, second baseman Hubert Jesus with three runs, one RBI, and left fielder Luke Elliott with one run, four RBI’s. The winning pitcher of the game was R.A. Meyer.
