Manta Rays rule throwing events at McDonald’s All School trackfest trials

THE second part of the high school and junior high school qualifying trials for the 2007 McDonald’s All Schools Track and Field Championships were held last Thursday with Southern High School dominating the throwing events.
Southern senior Sylvan Rangamar led the Manta Rays triumph in throwing events, as he posted a new meet record in the discus throw in the boys’ 15-18 age group with his 43.60m heave.
With his record-breaking performance, Rangamar beat five other participants in the discus throw. Kagman’s Jordan Tagabuel placed second with his 25.27m, followed by teammate Joshua Nakashima (24.42m) and Kagman’s Chris Palero (22.76m), Richard Ogumoro (22.38m) and Edward San Nicolas (21.47m).
All six qualified for the McDonald’s All Schools trackfest, which will be held on May 12 at the Oleai Sports Complex track and field facility.
Nakashima redeemed himself in the javelin posting 37.26m to beat Kagman’s John Santos (37.10m) and teammate Leroy Rangamar (35.52m). The three students gained slots in the May tournament along with Sylvan Tagabuel, Hopwood’s Vicente Cepeda and Kagman’s Edward San Nicolas and Keoni Chariton.
The Lady Rays’ Eva Ito topped the girls’ javelin with her 28.15m. She outclassed Hopwood’s Yue Wang, MHS’s Rachel Rangamar and Kagman’s Yvonne Bennett. All four are assured of slots in the meet.
Lei Rangamar beat sister Rachel in the girls’ discus with the former recording 23m compared to the latter’s 21.62m. Wang was third, while Ito placed fourth.
Hopwood’s Reylynn Sapong and JR Concepcion continued to dominate running events in the junior high school division, as they ruled the trials in the 400m and 800m races.
Sapong timed in at one minute, 14.73 seconds in the 400m qualifier to beat six other runners.
Also qualified to race in the 400m are Hopwood’s Sarah Aldan, Marbelyn Asito, Tracy Uchay, Christina Tudela and Joan Defang and Whispering Palms’ Madison Schultz
Sapong clocked 3:13.77 in the 800m beating Schultz, who posted 3:39.65 and also qualified for the McDonald’s trackfest.
Concepcion timed in at 1:07.77 in the 400m and 2:45.60 in the 800m.
Also clinching tickets for next’ month’s trackfest are ChaCha’s Kolfred Mettao, Whispering Palm’s Lucas Knecht, Hopwood’s Nino Feria, ChaCha’s Douglas Dillay, Hopwood’s Rocco Reyes, Saipan Community School’s Jeremy Williams and Grace Christian Academy’s Samuel Mosley in the 400m and Hopwood’s James Rabauliman and Stephen Austin in the 800m.
In the junior high school’s 3000m, the qualifiers are Hopwood’s Lina Manalili, Nicko Salem and In Boom Choo and Saipan Community School’s Joseph Martin.
