Lawmaker says military can help NMI economy

REPRESENTATIVE Manuel A. Tenorio says the CNMI government should urge the U.S. military to make its presence on Tinian more permanent.
“I think it’s about time that we explore a more permanent military presence here,” Tenorio, R-Saipan, said in an interview yesterday.
“We don’t have anything else. We don’t have many natural resources. Our tourism and garment industries are down.”
Tenorio authored House Resolution 15-108 which urges Gov. Benigno R. Fitial to communicate with the U.S. Department of Defense regarding the establishment of a permanent military presence in the Northern Marianas.
His resolution was unanimously adopted by the House of Representatives on Monday.
“[T]he establishment of a permanent military presence in the commonwealth will greatly assist in the revitalization of the CNMI’s economy, as it has done to other economies, including those of Guam and Hawaii,” the resolution stated.
